There is magick all over Los Angeles. It’s the land of angels so you have to expect it, naturally. I’ve lived in LA, so I’ve had time plenty of time to explore and find its hidden treasures. Although not quite as hidden as Sword and the Rose in San Francisco, LA most certainly has its own occult treasure, Panpines Magickal Marketplace. It’s one of my favorite places to visit whether I’m living in LA or visiting. Have you ever seen the movie, The Craft? Well, Faruza Balk, star of The Craft, came to know of Panpipes while filming the movie and actually owned it for a while. She sold it in 2001 to Jymie Darling and Vicky Adams.
Panpipes is a small shop situated on Caheunga Street off Hollywood Blvd. with the most enchanting window display. Walking in… well… walking in is like walking into a magickal emporium you might expect to find on a movie set. Behind the counter is the MOST AMAZING apothecary of oils and herbs. When I go there I’m drawn to their magickal oils, and they have a charged magical oil for everything and anything.
I’d like to tell you about my last visit, because I believe it was one of significance to me….
I was in Palm Springs with my mom and we were driving up to San Francisco. I’d been talking for months about visiting Panpipes but even though I had every chance to visit, something would get in my way. This time, I decided nothing would prevent me from going. I detoured our road trip to drive through LA instead of around it and parked near Panpipes. I said to my mom, I need to go, that’s why we are stopping. She said, “OK. I understand.” As I walked down the sidewalk before entering I said to myself, “My intent is success. Success after a very long journey and I want a little bit of faerie added to it.” Easy peasy, right?! And easy peasy it was! When I got inside the witch was helping another customer and there was another customer in front of me, so that made me customer #3. Perfect! Anyhow, as I was waiting I began to look around and in front of me, and to my right were a bunch of small vials filled with magickal potion. I decided to pick one up. They were small vials so until I brought the vial I picked up to my face I had no idea what the label said. Well, the label read Aine. Who is Aine? She is the Queen of the Faeries. Cool, I thought. There’s the bit of faerie I was looking for. I stood there a bit longer and then decided to look at the bars of soap sitting right in front of me and what do I see… The one sitting there, looking me straight in the face, is yellow and says Success! Yes, that is right. As you can see my intension manifested right before my eyes.
Did I need a magickal oil on top of this… probably not, I already had my intension. I still had her make one. I do love their oils, and just before I ordered my new magickal oil, the gentlemen before made a point to let the witch know whatever oil she had made for him last time had worked. Has my oil worked for me? Yes! Indeed it has. In the most amazing, faerie magickal way I could have ever imagined. In fact, its more!
So… that’s my story. I actually have many stories of the magickal oils from Panpipes, and what I can tell you is they work. White magick, black magick, grey magick, low magick, high magick. Whatever magick it is.. check them out when you are in LA. It’s worth the trip.
Panpipes is located at 1641 N. Cahuenga Blvd., Hollywood, CA.
Being incarnate faeries servicing the light we’re naturally drawn to crystals and various types of spiritual items you’d find in most new age shops. So when we are out and about, if there is an occult shop, new age shop, crystal shop or trinket shop with faeries inside you can be sure we’ll find it.
Because there are so many, and many of the magickal items we buy come from them, we thought it’d be best to break up the blog into the different cities we visit and to keep the list to include only our favorites. So stay tuned for more cities to come. We’ll also continue to review different shops we find online like White Magick Alchemy that Anne Elizabeth previously blogged about. We might even start to talk about our favorite places to buy faerie fashions but that’s for another time. Today’s post is on some of our favorite magickal stores in San Francisco, CA.
Sword and the Rose
85 Carl St.
This occult store is true to its name because it’s the only one I’ve encountered that is truly in every word occult. And by that I mean it’s even hidden. It’s my favorite store and has been since I first stepped inside over 14 years ago. Back then even with the address and instructions on how to find it I had difficulty, but in the end had some help from a friend. I’ll always remember when I first walked into it because it was as enchanting as the description I had been given. It truly felt magical.
When you enter through the gate you walk into a beautiful courtyard surrounded with bushes, vines and flowers. There is a fountain in the middle and small bench to sit on. In the far back is the store. It looks like a small enchanted hut. And the door is one of those doors cut in half where you can open the top separately. Inside its small, beautifully decorated with Egyptian paintings and has a very choice selection of items. There is small fireplace with comfortable chairs to sit in, and a beautiful altar on the left wall. On the right wall behind the counter are shelves of jars of incense and oils.
Sword and the Rose is known for its special incense. The incense is made by the shop owners. It’s made as a sacred offering to the deity it’s named after. The owner has even traveled to each of the temples of the deities he makes the incense for. If you purchase incense at Sword and the Rose, remember it’s considered an offering to the deity you are working with, so get into consciousness and say a gratitude prayer as you light it.
Sword and the Rose is located on Carl Street right off Cole Street. 85 Carl is through a walkway. There are stores on either side of the walkway and a door at the end. Sometimes it’s open, sometimes it’s not. The sign for the store is above it. You can walk through the doorway even if it’s shut. When you enter the courtyard, you will see the store in the very back.
The Love of Ganesha
1310 Haight St.
The Love of Ganesha is such a lovely store, and the women who work at it are equally as lovely. They are always so very welcoming, warm and sweet; offering you tea and cookies as soon as you enter. The Love of Ganesha contains everything from fun Indonesian clothing, bhindis and tapestries to crystals and incense. The store is always plentiful and packed full of items. Be sure to dig around, there’s lots to choose from. One of my favorite purchases here are our Balinese umbrellas. We use them for our faerie tents.
Inside the store has a beautiful meditation room with altar that is open to the public. It’s at the back of the store on right.
All the profits for The Love of Ganesha go to the Amma foundation.

Happy New Year Faeries! I hope 2012 is treating you well so far! Melanie Dawn recently posted an article about altars and how we do it, so I thought it would be a good time to share with you my favorite shop for candles and magickal supplies.
I first purchased some lovely blue pillar Litha Faerie candles for my Summer Solstice / Litha altar. These candles smelled divine, of summer flowers and herbs. Perfect for a faerie day and celebration! They were beautifully dusted with silver, shimmery glitter. If you know about faeries , than you know there’s nothing they like more than glitter. I was delighted that these beauties burned for all three evenings of our celebration.
I also ordered some Litha casting herbs for blessing our sacred ritual fire. I was very impressed with the quality and variety of this herbal blend. It also makes it really easy to bless your fire or cauldron since all the herbs associated with the season are in the mix, so it takes out the guess work on knowing which to herbs to use.
What is really notable about all the products that this gem of a shop offers is the quality is truly exceptional. All the candles and hand poured by the shop owner or her daughters. They use high quality, natural scents, oils, and wax. Everything is made when the moon is right and witch blessed honoring the old ways.
For Lamas I got a beautiful candle as a birthday gift for Melanie. This is her special day like Litha is mine so I knew she needed a special candle of her own. It was a beautiful dark purple / wine color and it smelled of ripe berries, and harvest fruits. Again the quality was superb and perfect for the season.
For Samhain I tried out the Between Worlds Pumpkin and Séance candle set for my ancestor altar. They smelled so yummy of pumpkin goodness and spice. Perfect for the fall season. I even found an adorable mini cauldron that is perfect for making a quick altar in the woods because it’s small and easy to pack. It’s so cute and it’s just like a regular size cauldron so you can use it to burn incense on a charcoal disc inside.
For Yule I got two Wassail candles, a Holly King candle, a Yule Faerie candle, and incense, and Yule casting herbs . (The Wassail and the Holly King are the candles in the photo at the top of the page). Again they did not disappoint. Smelling of traditional Yule and Christmas memories of times past. What is lovely about these candles is that they make your space smell good even when not burning!
There are many Faerie offerings on the site and some of my favorites are the Yule Faerie Incense, any of the Faerie Statues, and the Faerie Dust for leaving offerings for the faeries. I also love the Pink Sugar Faerie Perfume. At first I had to acclimate myself to the scent, but after wearing it for a bit I’m now addicted to this perfume and wear it every day. It’s a generous portion, comes in an adorable glass bottle. It’s a beautiful shade of pink and it’s loaded with the finest faerie dust, aka: glitter!
I highly recommend the Money Drawing Spell Kit! It includes everything you require in a handy kit. I can say first had that it really works! The day after I did this spell I got a notice in the mail of unclaimed money of mine from an old insurance payment. They had an old address and had been trying to find me so they could send me a check. I know others swear by it as well!
Really I cannot say enough good things about White Magick Alchemy and it’s wares. The shop owner Nancy, is super sweet and I really feel good about supporting her. Everything is packed with care and you can tell that she puts lots of love and light into her products. Consider joining her mailing list so you find out about new products and sales. If you need any supplies or looking for adornments for your sacred space this would be the first place I would go. You are sure to find something that takes your fancy. You won’t be disappointed and I’m sure you’ll be looking for the next opportunity to order again.
Candlemas is almost here, and since good things can take some time I would order now if you want something special to complete your altar. I know I’ll be looking for the next reason to place a new order and what better than honoring the season, the old traditions and celebrating your spirituality!
