After much envisioning, planning and organization we are excited to see Belden Town, CA transform once again into Sunset Campout, for  another magical weekend in the woods.  Join us on July 22 – 24th for our 2016 celebration to gather and dance outside in the sunshine and beneath the moonlit starry sky along the enchanting Feather River. This year we are abstractly weaving in alchemic mystical elements into our thought processes and creations, as we honor the nomadic ritual of generous hospitality from the ancient near east.

ALTARS

Sunset Campout Main Altar 2015

Sunset Campout Main Altar 2015

We began designing altars for Sunset Campout back in 2002. The Main Altar, located on the side of the main dancefloor, is there as a graceful reminder to respect and to serve as a sacred space for blessings, meditation, reflection and to spark connection with that which is greater than us. This years altar is inspired by a Jain communal ritual in which a stone sculpture is anointed over the course of four days. Devotees pour various offering substances in the form of blessings and prayers over the figure. The Sunset Campout main altar will be adorned with a stone Ganesh, remover of obstacles, and campout attendees are invited to participate by pouring their blessings and prayers over the sculpture. Offerings in the form of sacred herbs and flowers will be provided.

THE FAERIE RING

The Sunset Campout Faerie Ring is an interactive heart centered communal environment designed to relax, breathe, reconnect and experience a little Sunset Campout magic. Throughout the years, the area has evolved into a space hosting yoga, meditation, sound healing, creative conscious workshops, ceremony and more. As creators and hosts of the Faerie Ring, altars and workshops, if we aren’t on the dancefloor, come find us in the Faerie Ring, on the lawn across from the lodge, for a wide range of conscious workshops and activities.

Shaman Durek

The Journey of Obstacles [Shaman Durek]: Take a journey with Shaman Durek to connect with levels of Self. Dive into the subconscious and meet head on with different aspects of yourself. First meet the guide, which is the heart, then face your fears and meet the hero. After you learn the lessons you will become the teacher of the things you went on the path about.

The Sacred Gift [Shaman Durek]: Shaman Durek will lead you on a meditation, then discuss being a nomad and what being in nomadic love means for our future now. After the discussion, he will guide you through a group exercise and finish with a closing breath.

SOUND HEALING

11903694_10152941679685957_4773506324308552249_n

Danny Goldberg’s Sound Immersion Experience

Crystal Bowl Sound Meditation [Jessica Neideffer]: Crystal singing bowls work with our intention to accelerate this healing process. Based on Vedic medicine we work with the notes of the musical scale. When sound is projected with intention into the dis-eased area correct harmonic patterns and vibrations can be restored.

Sound Immersion Experience [Danny Goldberg]: A restorative sound healing with gongs, Tibetan bowls, flutes, chimes and ocean drum to guide you into a deep meditative state. Through the vibrations of Danny’s collection of instruments, you experience an inner calm and deep relaxation that enables you to journey within and center.

Chakra Balancing & Sound Immersion Experience [Living Fae & Danny Goldberg]: A Chakra Balancing with vibrational sounds and deep heart expansion followed by Danny’s Goldberg’s Sound Immersion Experience with gongs, Tibetan bowls, flutes, chimes and ocean drum. This experience includes essential oils.

432Hz Healing Soundbath [Torkom Ji]:  A vibrational magic carpet ride through the harmonic tones and frequencies of the universe. Lay back and receive ethereal sounds as Torkom channels vibrations through his synthesizer with vacuum tubes tuned to 432Hz. This one-of-a-kind healing experience is designed to give the body and mind a full reset, and deepen your weekend experience.

PERFORMANCES & MOVIES

0154d20f-5742-4460-82d5-2101be21741f

Timo Beckwith

Original World Fusion Music [Timo Beckwith]: Original World Fusion Music by Timo Beckwith featuring exotic trance vocals, Shruti Box, Gourd Ennanga, Birimbau, Dunbeck, Pandiero, Darbuka, Flute, Frame Drum and Balaphone. Taking you on a soulful musical journey that can range from soft and subtle to intensely power jammin primal!

Tales of Love and Darkness [Shadow Dream Theatre]: An experimental mix of shadowplay, digital video and electronic music takes as its point of departure a masterpiece of modernist theater. A slapstick comedy performance, staged as Beckett’s “Act Without Words”, where the main character finds him(her)self thrown into an unfamiliar desert world.  As he/she explores her new, empty and harsh, reality, first trying in vain to escape, then trying to figure out how to survive in it, even stranger things begin to occur: some invisible force appears to hand some familiar objects to the protagonist that might be just the things he/she needs to survive and be happy or not…

Sunday Night Movies: Wind down, get cozy and chill out to a collection of independent, counter culture and classic films specially selected by the Sunset Campout crew.

CEREMONY & WORKSHOPS

Jessica Choate

Faerie Tales & Faerie Rites [Living Fae & Pixie Pam]: Join us for tea and stories about how we work with Faeries and magic. Followed by a meditation and offering of energy to spark the seed of your connection to the Faerie Realm. Strengthen your faerie sight and integrate with Faerie and Earth energies to awaken ancient wisdom, guidance, creativity, wild playfulness and an indigenous heart. Receive your Faerie name.

Despacho Ceremony [Pixie Pam & Tara Samiy]: This gratitude ritual will allow us to thank all that we are grateful for in our life now and to come. Set your intentions for your Sunset campout experience to be filled with gratitude, love, happiness and more. We will create a larger despacho for the Sunset campout community for all the laughter, dancing and magic we will have and then create individual despachos for personal honoring. All materials will be provided.

The Shift – A Cacao Ceremony [D’ete Blackshire & Veronica Elizabeth]: The cacao ceremony offered on Friday night of the campout will launch festival tribal members to the heights of ecstatic love setting the tone for a weekend of joy, creative expression, and tribal unity.  Supported by the sacred wisdom of cacao, D’ete offers a practice in the medicine and skill of embodied alchemy. We will discover the sticky places of resistance to being love within our bodies and release fight by taking action upon awareness for a deep integration. Veronica will lead meditation journey and breath guidance to offer centering for the ceremonial work.  Let’s step into this anticipated weekend by blowing our hearts open, freeing our minds, and shift!  Please, go to www.burnthemystic.com or she-shaman.com for preparation guidelines and information on our ceremonial cacao and the mind, body, soul health benefits.

The Alchemy of Life with Nature’s Gifts [Jessica Choate]: We will talk about capturing the essence of  healing natural remedies for self love of a more balanced life through the alchemy of tinctures, elixirs and other useful ways to benefit the healing properties of earth’s gifts.

YOGA

11060283_888145357925867_871476366864395865_n-1

Feather River Flow [Alexandra Sargent]: Start your sunset campout experience with this intermediate level hatha/ vinyasa based sequence. This class will be focused on calming the mind from all the excitement for the weekend, and engaging the body through a strengthening and awakening flow. Prior yoga experience recommended, simple twists and gentle backbends included. Bringing a block or towel is recommended.

Yoga Mind, Spirit, Body [Alexandra Sargent]: Yoga is a technique for arriving in the present moment. The very moment you focus your attention back into your body and breathe, you begin to experience a deep sense of stillness. Influenced from the teachings of vini-yoga, this gentle sequence will involve less physical strength, and more focus on simple movements and breath control. A block or towel is recommended to bring with you.

Fun Flow [Zalia Aliriza]: Wake up easy and get moving in this one hour, all levels, flow class, that will guarantee you’ll be ready to hit the rest of the day with an open heart & a big smile. An invigorating combination of light workout and deep stretch, you’ll be encouraged to explore a variety of postures, link breath and movement as you stretch and awaken.

Mystic Vinyasa Flow [Erika van Gemeren]: We will journey into our hearts and move our bodies from this space so that we will feel a deeper connection to our own selves and all the beings on this planet. We’ve all had mystical experiences, a sense that one cannot adequately describe the richness of the experience, we’ve had feelings of deja vu or feelings like you’ve know someone in prior lives, that’s because we really have been with each other infinite amounts of times. Our planet is awakening and we are the ones they have been waiting for. Let’s do this for all!

Yoga Eye Flow [Kim Abels]: Yogi Eye Flow is a Vinyasa Flow Class that creates the synergy of internal focus and release of mind. Using the movements and continuous focus of breath, you will find your own flow. Maintaining strength and balance will come naturally with each transition and hold of poses. Music intended to take you outside of your mind to allow no judgement of the practice. Yogi Eye Flow will leave you feeling back to your self with some fresh skin, restore everything underneath the flesh & capture your true spirit.

Gentle Yoga [Cara Smith]:  75 minutes of a gentle yoga flow, a combination of Hatha yoga with the idea of restoration in mind. You’ll leave the class feeling both relaxed and energized.

TAROT READINGS

Ida Feshangchi is a tarot reader and Reiki practitioner with 12 years of experience in the metaphysical sciences and healing arts. She will be available for readings Friday-Sunday from 1-5 pm. Come by and sign up for a reading.

Sunset Campout July 17 – 19th: Faerie Ring with Living Fae

Our favorite annual 3 days of art, music, and camping event, Sunset Campout, is quickly approaching and we are fervently planning enhancements and an evolution to the Sunset Campout Faerie Ring and Workshops. Sunset Campout takes place in Belden Town, CA along the breathtaking Feather River July 17 – 19th, 2015.

As with previous years we began planning early on with our Sunset Sound System organizers, Galen and Solar, with a desire to inspire and enlighten the crew and festival goers. That early collaborative planning gave birth to this year’s Sunset Campout theme.

Walkway to Dance Magic

Walkway to Dance Magic

“Starting in 2013 we began to create an inspirational theme for the Sunset Campout as a way to unify all our creative crews and festival goers in a way that reflects the mood of our current collective.  The theme is not meant to be only a literal guide but more intended to trigger mental imagery or a feeling one can draw upon for inspiration that will connect us all for our amazing weekend in the woods.  This year’s theme is ShangriLa, the mystical utopia of the Himalayas. ShangriLa represents both a magical hidden place and an era of enlightened consciousness.  In the 1933 novel, The Lost Horizon, it’s described as an earthly paradise, where people are permanently happy, have a sense of purpose and are almost immortal.  It’s a place filled with enchantment and wonder that lies deep within the hearts of those who live there and those who seek to find it. For many of our attendees and contributors alike, the Sunset Campout has been described as an almost utopian setting. This is our own ShangriLa, nestled in a hidden valley, protected from the outside world, for one weekend together. This year we invite you to be inspired to recreate and embody your version, no matter how abstract, of ShangriLa.” ~ Sunset Sound System

Prepping for Sunset Campout 2012

Faerie Ring ~ Faerie Temple

Sunset Campout: July 13 – 15

Preparations once again are underway for our annual family favorite glamping event, the Sunset Campout in Belden Town, CA. We are looking forward to another year of amazing music, art, people and magic!

Heart of Faerie (left) & Faerie Temple (right)

The Faerie Ring, located on the grass across from the Belden Town lodge, will be adorned with the Faerie Temple, the Heart of Faerie, the Faerie Love Nest (new this year!) and an Offering & Blessing Altar (also new to the Faerie Ring this year).

Stop by the Faerie Ring day or night. Sit for a minute, take a deep breath, relax and open your heart to connect with your  divine source,   reconnect with your soul family and experience the sacred magic of the faeries.

There is no smoking and shoes must be off when inside the Faerie Temple and Heart of Faerie. These are sacred spaces charged with magical energy which we hold great respect for. As the signs always say “Please don’t piss off the faeries.”

You’ll find more of our sacred altars placed throughout the event. The altars will once again bestow the beautiful flower designs by Intrinsic and stained glass art pieces by Michiko Thompson.

Stained Glass art by Michiko Thompson

Whether you are spending the day or night experiencing everything the beach has to offer or shaking your booty on the main dance floor our faerie magic will be sprinkled upon you like sparkling, glittering, enchanting faerie dust. ✶*¨`*.✫*¨*.¸¸.✶*¨`*.✫*¨*.¸¸.✶*¨`*.✫

Sunset Campout 2011 – Here We Come!

Date: July 15 – 17th
Location: Belden, CA
Website: Sunsetcampout.com

We are nearing the final days of preparation for an annual event that is very near and dear to our hearts, and WE ARE SO EXCITED! We’ve literally been conceptualizing and designing for the Sunset Campout since the beginning of the year. Anne’s packed. I’m packed… well almost finished. We are ready! Are you?

Anne and I have both been attending Sunset parties since the late 90’s. In fact we first met outside on the pier before a Sunset Boat Party back in 2001. The Sunset Campout is where I started doing public altars, and Anne started collaborating with me on them when the event started up again in Belden, CA. Being part of it, and being given the opportunity to express ourselves in the way we do means so very much to us. We are eternally grateful.

With each year we always aim to take things to new heights. This year we’ve decided to embellish the Faerie Tents a bit more and make it into a Faerie Ring. We also recently blessed each of the tents on Summer Solstice with their new names. Temple of Aine and Astarte’s Veil. Aine is Queen of the Faeries. Astarte is the Queen of Heaven and her veil is the cosmos. We’ve designed these places as sacred spaces you can go to connect with others and have some chill time but still be central to the party. Also on the lawn this year will be a Meditation Pyramid, a Wishing Bowl, and one of our new creations The Faerie Looking Glass. Be sure to check it out, it’s a magic mirror!

Beyond the Faerie Ring we’ve got some cool new things planned for the altars this year. I dare not tell you though, I’ll just say I had a vision in a dream and one of the altars is the manifestation of that dream. This year we are also very excited to be collaborating with Minx from Radiant Atmospheres on the altars, and Intrinsic who will do the flowers. You might remember Intrinsic’s flower creations from the Sunset Boat Parties and this year’s first Sunset park party. Timmy Herrlein, who along with designing all the DJ booths, is building us something for the altar from my vision. We are really looking forward to seeing it all come together.

Now Galen, Solar and J-Bird have been very hard at work organizing and planning the event. I know because every time I talk to them they are having another meeting. They have some new features to the parking and gate entrance which should make for a smooth and fun entry. Get ready for the magic party bus! Try to pack as light as you can though, it’ll make for an easier entry and leaving for you.

As with any Sunset party you go to, they have a fantastic production planned. Stepping it up each year is also part of their agenda for the campout. When you are at the party you can’t really imagine how they could take it up a notch from the year before but they pull it off every time. So if you thought the other years were rad, just wait! Anne and I can’t wait to dance our booties off. I’m sure you’ll see us on the dancefloor more than once. Check out Sunsetcampout.com for the list of DJ’s and bands. Know: Audio is once again providing their super sound.

Every year I profess to Radiant Atmospheres & Coil, UV99, and Slide & Spin how their lighting, lasers and visual magic have blown my mind so I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us this year. I have no doubt in my mind I will say the same thing after all is said and done this year.

Healer Goddess Lois is back with her Sunset Rejuvenation team of massage therapists, juices and face painters. She has some of the best therapists in the city there with us. I’ve had work done by Lois before and what she did for me was extremely healing and exactly what I needed, so if you have a chance to get a massage from her or someone on her team I highly recommend it.

Ursula Xanthe Young has been doing double time with being a new mother and planning all the Live Art and Display with the help of Krescent Carasso. This year there will be an onsite art gallery displaying work from each of the artists next to the Faerie Ring. Krescent is also displaying her visual magic on the beach at night again, so be sure to make your way to beach at night as well as in the day.

For more info on the Sunset Campout and all it has to offer please be sure to check out the website Sunsetcampout.com. There is some detailed important event information on it you should read.

Now before I sign off the Faeries want me to remind everyone about the trash. Please don’t piss them off. Remember you need to take your garbage with you. Belden town doesn’t want it. When it’s time to leave we know we are all tired, but it’s important that we clean up after ourselves. Take your floaties with you, try to find that one shoe you are missing from the pile, don’t leave your cups and bottles on the altars, DJ Booths or Sound System, and if you smoke don’t throw them on the ground. We don’t want to pick them up after you. Mother Earth loves you. Show her how much you love her by keeping her beautiful!

A Review of Lightning in a Bottle 2011

I made my way down to Silverado, CA Memorial Day weekend to this year’s sold out Lightning in a Bottle festival put on by The Do Lab. It’s taken me a few years to get there, but I finally made it. This was my first year attending so I can give you my perspective of the festival as a virgin!

Honestly, I absolutely loved it. Minus a few (I’ll call them) discomforts I experienced my overall experience was one of wonder, inspiration, consciousness awareness, and joy. I arrived there on Friday around 2pm with my friend Usa Devi who I spent the weekend referring to as “Festival Queen”.

Apparently 2pm is the time many people arrive. Although it did sound like a gazillion people were there right at 4pm on Thursday. Anyhow arriving at 2pm and not having a car camping pass as a regular festival attendee means you not only take a people mover to your campsite but you have to fight your way on it against the cutters. Our campsite, due to arriving when we did, was in the upper level which was quite far from general parking. After having to wait what felt like forever (okay maybe it was about 45 min) in the heat with our abundance of glamping gear we fought our way onto the people mover. I only pushed one person off, I promise. [I’m kidding].

To give you an idea of what the people mover is, it’s a large white pick-up truck with red wooden beams on either side. You know the kind they pile immigrants onto in movies when they are sneaking off to the “new world”. I felt somewhat like one of those people. There I was smashed between my belongings and someone’s cooler digging into my back making my way to the Lucent Temple of Consciousness.

After only two trips and leaving the faerie tent behind in the car, we set up camp. I had a small cry but let go of the faerie tent as it was just a little too much to carry. Don’t worry, I was sure to ensure all my necessary glamping gear, aka the full length mirror, made it up the hill with us. Once we finished setting up and faerie beautifying ourselves, Festival Queen and I ventured off to explore the festival.

Now you might be asking yourself, why is she referring to Usa as Festival Queen. Was she really Queen of the Festival, the one so many women dressed up in their fancy outfits strive to be? No Usa was not the official Lightning in the Bottle Festival Queen. If that were the case I wouldn’t have had the delightful experience of the people mover now would I. I call her Festival Queen because I felt like I was part of a royal court being around her.

As we walked around I was pleasantly surprised by the choice of food vendors. There were so many healthy choices which were really nice to see, eat and drink. In fact, we didn’t bring a huge amount of food with us, and we didn’t need to. I typically am not one to eat a lot and at festivals I rarely eat. Usually people are trying to get me to eat. This time was different though. I ate, and ate very healthy. In fact, my friend Madhvi said every time she saw me I was eating, so apparently I was eating quite a bit. Good thing there was so much walking to be done!

This is a festival of music and art, and by my opinion the art was awesome. I really enjoyed taking it all in. There certainly was no shortage of it. Where ever you went there was eye candy and some very cool interactive pieces. Day time or glowing at night the art was plentiful. There were even some memorable Burning Man pieces on display. Sunday was the art walk. All the Lightning in a Paintcan live art is available for bidding in a silent auction. The auction is used to make money for the DoLab’s non-profit, The Do Art Foundation.

If you ask me what my favorite thing to do is, I’ll tell you it is dancing. Ok, maybe it’s dancing and building altars, but dancing is definitely right up at the top of the list. If there is a DJ playing good dance music you will typically find me dancing right in front of him/her. For the most part I found great music to dance to. I’m not a big dubstep fan, so I had tendency to dance away from anyone playing dubstep, but I was still always able to find something I liked to dance to. If you like dubstep, you won’t have a problem finding it there. I spent most of my dancing time at the Woogie Stage. I did make it over to the Lightning stage for some key performances by Lucent Dossier, Beats Antique and Pretty Lights. As to be expected they lit up the crowd with their performances and pretty light shows!

One of the areas of the festival I spent a lot of time at was the Lucent Temple of Consciousness. Being someone who builds altars and sacred spaces I always like to check out what others are doing. And even though it’s spiritual and I know what I’m seeing is a divine creation, I often find myself being slightly critical when I’m taking in what someone else has designed. Let’s just say I have a tendency to inspect the altar before I take it in and connect. I do my best to quiet that voice and acknowledge it’s my ego but sometimes the critical voice makes itself heard. Well on this occasion I was more than amazed by the design and creation of the temple. It was all breathtaking by my standards. When I looked around and considered the attention to detail, the work and energy put forth to create it, I was truly uplifted, and quite honestly a bit mesmerized. There were so many beautiful altars and different spaces created. I didn’t sit in all of them but I certainly found more than one where you could just sit and connect with that inner part of yourself. Derick Ion and the Satya Yuga Collective not only inspired me but allowed me to tap in and express the part of me that makes my heart go zing. They put on tons of workshops as well; everything from kundalini yoga, to permaculture and raw cooking to Marianne Williamson. Seeing the woman that wrote “Our Deepest Fear” was certainly a highlight of the weekend for me.

Now the last area I’ll talk about is the marketplace. I know a lot of people aren’t fond of consumerism at festivals, but I love it. It’s where I can find the type of faerie goddess fashions and accessories that I absolutely love wearing. I also like knowing that I’m supporting independent designers. If you like to shop like I do, you might find the marketplace a bit dangerous, so save up your money if you ever plan to hit this festival. Some of my favorite designers in the marketplace were Kelsey’s Creations, Fourth Dimension Designs, Kucoon Designs, Blue Star 7 and Timjan Design. I think I put together my next faerie goddess outfit with each of their pieces. Watch for it at the Carmel Valley Summer Solstice Celebration or the Sunset Campout this summer.

Before I sign off I want to say how impressed I was by the level of green consciousness the festival’s organizers put forth. It’s a large festival with a lot of people so it can prove to be a difficult challenge to keep people green. They are the winners of the 2010 Green Festival Award so they do have a lot to live up to, and I think they do a good job. Festival Queen was a little less impressed than me suggesting they should have compostable porta potties to be truly green. Based on the way the ground looked every morning after all the craziness died down I think some of the festival goers still need some waking up. But I believe the more the organizers continue their passion for being green the more conscious the attendees will become. You gotta have faith! With a motto like Leave it Better, Leave it Beautiful I’d like to think they are well on their way to waking some of those less conscious attendees up.

There is so much more I experienced and could say about this festival. I truly had a lovely time and recommend it to anyone thinking about checking it out next year. A few words of advice: get a car camping pass, otherwise pack light; bring comfortable shoes, you’ll do a lot of walking; bring a very warm jacket for the evenings, it was COLD; save your money and bring lots of cash if you like to shop!

This faerie gives Lightning in a Bottle five faerie stars! I’m already looking forward to next year! ~ Melanie Dawn
